Nazlı Kaya (*1980) received her bachelor's degree as a graphic designer in Ankara, studied animation in Zlín and completed audiovisual studies at FAMU. She is the author of animated and documentary films, which she creates together with Tomáš Doruška. Her work is based on the contradictions between modernity and tradition. For her early works, she finds inspiration in her own lived experience as a foreigner, who gradually overcomes language and cultural barriers and discovers local traditions and history. These are often moving collages; a combination of hand-drawn flat animation with documentary clips. "As a child, I wanted to be a submarine captain. Coincidence and fascination with the imaginary world created by Jan Švankmajer led me to Czech. Ambitious captain's goals turned into the field of graphics, illustration and animation, which still allow me to dream," says the artist. Her works show a desire to co-create extraordinary worlds, boldly use children's imagination or create novel analogies. Her works have been presented at a number of international festivals (IDFA, Annecy, BAFTA). |
