“I continue to be amazed by them, as artists and teachers, as individuals and as a couple. By sharing their skills and knowledge with other glass artists from around the world, Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová have helped to create an international glass community and have become a legend in their own time.”
Dale Chihuly
“Along with his friends, Dale - one of the founders - built Pilchuck into a school that reaches out to students and glass makers from all over the world. The environment he created there is an homage to education, an homage to glass art in America and internationally.”
Stanislav Libenský
In 1968 a young American student pursuing glass art stopped in front of a home in the small Czechoslovak town of Železný Brod and called out, “Is this Libenský’s house?”
Captivated by Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová’s magnificent architectural installation of cast glass, which he had seen at the EXPO 67 World’s Fair in Montreal, the young Dale Chihuly decided to visit the artists in their at the time Communist-governed country.
This momentous meeting marked the beginning of an ongoing personal and artistic relationship that links three legends of contemporary glass art.
The hitherto largest joint exhibition of Stanislav Libenský, Jaroslava Brychtová, and Dale Chihuly in the Czech Republic presents their work - glass objects, drawings and paintings, as well as some previously unpublished archival materials.
Organized by the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art in cooperation with the Dale Chihuly Studio and the Libenský family, the exhibition is an homage to an extraordinary story of mutual respect, professional support, and personal friendship, which was born in the difficult times of the Normalization and has endured for an unbelievable 50 years.
