Marian Palla - A retrospective in 7 ActsMoravian gallery in Brno - Pražák Palace, Husova 18, BrnoApril 21, 2017 - August 6, 2017
The exhibition of Marian Palla - last year's laureate of the Michal Ranný Award - will present the work of the artist through reconstructions of his artistic actions. Some of them were physically realized by the artist in private and reached the public domain either as artefacts from the outcome of a particular action, or as documentary records in the form of photographs and videos made in the course of the action. A specific group is made up of actions and ideas related to actions in the form of a written concept, instructions or a special type of contract establishing the existence of a given event. These were then disseminated among Palla's friends and acquaintances as brief notes sent by post or they circulated among people by word of mouth as stories or messages. The principle question that the exhibition will pose is to what extent are we able to make accessible, update or re-create evanescent works of art which rely in retrograde on their own and always fragmentary documentation or under which conditions is it possible to stage and reproduce an ephemeral experience, or whether we can relive past artistic events and actions of the artist. It opens up a plethora of topical questions regarding the alternatives of presenting action art through gallery institutions. In which way will these transient artistic expressions transform the role of the gallery, the curator or even the educationalist in accompanying programmes? The exhibition will also rely on the intensive involvement of the public. The actors taking part in the reconstructions of Palla's actions will often include volunteers or the gallery staff themselves. |
