Homage to Detai - Design as an integral part of modernist architecture and interior designGallery UM, UMPRUM, nám. Jana Palacha 80, Prague 1January 4, 2018 - February 17, 2018
Opening: Thursday, January 4th, 2018 at 6 pm Author and curator of the exhibition: Adam Štěch The first exhibition of 2018 in the UM Gallery will present the result of a long-term project by the curator of design and architecture Adam Štěch along with graphic designers Jan Klos and Matěj Činčera from the OKOLO group. The show Homage to Detail a tribute to his more than ten years of wandering the world and revealing the hidden treasures of 20th-century modernist architecture. "The exhibition Homage to Detail was another challenge for us, the concept for the exhibition formed during the past year, as we intensified our focus on architecture we realized that details are often fundamental elements in Modernist architecture. The exhibition thus attempts to present an exhaustive listing of a certain typology and show it through its many fantastic forms, "says Adam Štěch, author of the exhibition and member of the OKOLO group. For the Homage to Detail exhibition, he selected hundreds of photos from his archive and presented them as an atlas of architectural and interior details, these elements were created by architects as part of the whole building design. Lighting, seating, storage, tables, railings, doors, windows and other decorative or functional elements are based on the modernist idea of the artwork as a whole known as (Gesamtkunstwerk), and tell stories about the versatile skills of the modernist architects. Adam Štěch offers a view of these elaborate objects as a part of the architecture, but also as works with their own artistic value. They all reflect the styles of famous and lesser-known 20th-century architects, offering a completely different perspective on designing furniture, lighting, and other objects, thus revealing chapters in the history of applied art as they have not been seen before. The project Homage to Detail premiered as Objects of Refinement at the London Design Festival in London in autumn 2017. "In London, where the show was presented at the prestigious Brompton Design District show, it was very popular, especially among professionals and design enthusiasts, including Justin McGuirk of the London Museum Design, architectural critic Sam Jacob, and curator Max Fraser. Some visitors regarded the exhibition as Instagram or Pinterest on a table, but never the less it did not miss the attention of professional media including Wallpaper, Domus, The Spaces, TL Mag, Damn, Form, Curbed and many others. "We are very pleased to present an extended version of the exhibit on our home soil in the UM gallery, "adds Adam Štěch.
