Ignác František Platzer (1717–1787) - Drawings

National Gallery in Prague - Schwarzenberg Palace, Hradčanské nám. 2, Prague 1

13. June 2017 - 13. September 2017

The National Gallery in Prague holds a unique collection of about 300 drawings linked with the Prague sculptural workshop of the Platzer family, whose founder was Ignác František Platzer. The selection from the drawing oeuvre of this distinguished late-Baroque sculptor will be presented on the occasion of the 300thanniversary of his birth.

Platzer received his artistic training at the Viennese Academy. From the 1740s, he worked in Prague where he became the leading representative of sculpture of late Baroque and Neo-Classicism. His workshop produced sculptural decoration for many palaces, churches and chateaux – sculptures by Platzer can be found, for example, in Prague Castle or in the headquarters of the National Gallery in Prague, Kinský Palace. His sketches and designs are especially valued for their immense documentary significance; they are, however, also aesthetically impressive and high-quality drawings.
