Jiří Slíva (born in 1947 in Pilsen) is a cartoonist, graphic artist, musician, poet, sociologist and futurologist who has become a phenomenon on the Czech and European art scene thanks to his humorous drawings, illustrations and graphic art. His work has been featured in more than 180 books, several of them devoted solely to his work. Jiří Slíva has won numerous awards and is featured in many public and private collections. He has worked as a freelance artist since 1979.
Jiří Slíva’s work is characterised by his sense of humour, playful exaggeration and visual puns, and by his ability to capture his subject matter without using words. Perhaps because he never studied art but is self-taught, he has found a distinctive style based on simplicity, stylised drawing and bold colours. Jiří Slíva typically addresses specific themes: coffee, wine, Jewish aphorisms and anecdotes, relationships, and also music, especially jazz ... Unlike other cartoonists, Slíva does not comment on current affairs but favours broader and timeless themes that can be understood the world over.
The exhibition at the Gallery of West Bohemia has been planned in close collaboration with the artist. It will present selected graphic art and drawings from the last twenty years under four headings: wine, iconic figures (Charlie Chaplin, Sigmund Freud, Mickey Mouse, ...), jazz and nonsense.
