Milan Grygar
One could say that the founding element of Milan Grygar’s work, born on 24th October 1926 in Zvolen in Slovakia, is a drawing. In the mid-1960s he made an important discovery through it. In 1963 he left abstract painting, followed by year and half long search for an acoustic equivalent to drawing, finally he found out how to leverage that specific sound of pen, touching the surface of paper. It had become an impuls for substantial change in Grygar`s artwork. Since 1965 he has been fully concentrated on acoustic drawings and associated performances. He was overstepping the borders of visual expression by extending its potency into acoustic space. The artist commented on the problematic followingly: „I felt certain there were correlations in the world, such as that sound is connected to visuality and visuality cannot exist without acoustics.“ Drawings have gradually become sheet music, carried out by musicians as a pice of music. Besides acoustic drawings, Grygar began creating lively drawings using various mechanical items (key toys – bird, frog, han, wolf, children`s whistle, but also geared wheel, screw, fan, Alpin bells), as well as haptic drawings, and through these he expanded into space.
A new edition of five lithographs of the artist´s Acoustic Drawings, 1992/2018 (63.5 x 79 cm), consisting of 30 exemplars of each and all signed by the artist, has been produced to accompany the exhibition.
