The Cosmic Architecture of Jan Konůpek

National Gallery in Prague - Trade Fair Palace, Dukelských hrdinů 47, Prague 7

5. December 2017 - 4. March 2018

Curator: Eva Bendová

Venue: Cabinet of Prints and Drawings in the Trade Fair Palace

The Cabinet of Prints and Drawings presents watercolours and charcoal drawings by Jan Konůpek dating back to 1924–1946 with architectural visions and abstract compositions of cosmic and dreamlike “cities”. We follow up with the cycle exploring the possibilities of architectural drawing (previous exhibitions were dealing with personalities like Bedřich Feuerstein and Vlastislav Hofman). Jan Konůpek, member of the art group Sursum, studied architecture in 1903–1906. In his later studies and monumental drawings, he also maintained the sense of attributes of the building materials and order, as well as a painterly conception of the symbolist view of the universe.
